The Future of Our Planet Starts with Knowledge
Climate change and pollution are import challenges of our time. Eco-Sphere provides the clarity you need to understand environmental issues.
Global Environmental Problems
The Problem
Global Warming
Global warming refers to the long-term increase in Earth’s average surface temperature, primarily due to human activities. Over the past century, this phenomenon has accelerated at an unprecedented rate, becoming one of the most pressing challenges facing humanity today. Understanding its causes, impacts, and possible solutions is essential for safeguarding the planet for future generations.
Global warming has far-reaching effects on the environment. One of the most visible consequences is the melting of polar ice caps and glaciers. This rises sea levels, which threaten coastal communities and ecosystems.
Many regions are experiencing more frequent and intense heatwaves, storms, droughts, and floods. These extreme weather events disrupt ecosystems, damage infrastructure and make serious risks to human life.
Biodiversity is another major concern. Many species struggle to adapt to rapidly changing temperatures and habitats leading to increased extinction rates. Coral reefs for example are highly sensitive to temperature changes and are being severely impacted by ocean warming.
Plastic Pollution
Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste are produced worldwide. Because plastic is designed to be durable, it does not easily decompose. Instead, it breaks down into smaller pieces known as microplastics, which can persist in the environment for hundreds of years.
Much of this waste ends up in landfills but a significant amount leaks into natural environments, especially oceans. It is estimated that millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans annually, creating vast garbage patches and polluting coastlines.
Plastic pollution has devastating effects on wildlife. Marine animals like turtles, fish, and seabirds often mistake plastic for food. Eating plastic can block digestive systems, cause internal injuries and lead to starvation or death. Additionally, animals can become entangled in plastic debris restricting movement and causing injury.
Microplastics have also entered the food chain. Tiny plastic particles are consumed by small organisms which are then eaten by larger predators. This means that plastic is now present throughout entire ecosystems including those humans rely on for food.

Web Ecology
Web Ecology (WE) is an open-access journal issued by the European Ecological Federation (EEF), an organization representing the European ecological societies. Web Ecology publishes papers from all fields of ecology without any geographic restriction, but focused on the natural interactions that sustain communities, rather than on environmental policy or management.
Ecology& Society
This journal provides open access to all of its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
